Here in Newtok, the weather is changing and winter is comin'!
Yesterday, it snowed pretty much all day. I was actually in Bethel and thought there might have been a chance of me having to stay over another night because of the weather, but we have some of the best pilots in AK, so luckily I was able to get back to the village!
Ever since Joshua has known we would be moving to Alaska, he has been so excited to see the ice pack that comes down from the Bering Sea. And now I have been a little excited to see it since we have been watching all the seasons of The Deadliest Catch!
Well, today we got our wish… the ice pack is here!
All the chunks you see are ice!
Icicles!
This will be the first of many weather updates I'm sure since winter is just now coming so be prepared to read about several feet of snow (they got 17 feet of snow last year.. our house was completely covered so that'll be fun!), and how we handle our first Alaskan winter!
We heard this coming week the lows at night will be in the teens.
The sunlight is getting shorter and shorter as well. It doesn't get light now until around 10ish and the sun sets between 7 and 8pm. Usually mid-winter, there are about 4-5 hours of sunlight a day.
On a side note: I went to Bethel with two other new teachers for an inservice day. We went grocery shopping while we were there. Since it has been cold enough, we chanced it and actually bought some ice cream!
We thought if we couldn't find a freezer at our district office, the weather was cold enough we could leave it outside. But we brought it back, and Joshua and I enjoyed ice cream for the first time in 3 months! Mint Chocolate Chip never tasted so good!
(Alex, there was no Moose Tracks or you know that is what I would have brought back!)
